Review: Invitation Only by Kate Brian

CONTEMPORARY TEEN FICTION

Reed Brennan's future is looking as bright as the two-karat diamonds in her new housemates' cars. Being accepted to the most prestigious private boarding school in the country wasn't enough for Reed. She had to break every rule to do it, but she has accomplished the impossible:
Reed is a Billings Girl now.

And with her new status come respect, envy, and most important, opportunity. Not to mention the parties. Unfortunately, at the next illicit party in the Easton campus woods, her roommate snaps some pictures of Reed in more than one compromising position. She uses the photos to blackmail Reed: Dig up dirt on the most powerful and popular Billings Girls or she will have Reed expelled.

And speaking of parties, the Legacy is coming up. It's the invitation-only Halloween party in NYC and it's rumored that Thomas--Reed's MIA boyfriend--will be making an appearance there. Too bad Reed isn't even close to invited.

Wow, I'm on a roll today! I finished Private, the first book in the series this morning, and have already polished off this one. At the rate I'm going, I'll need to be back at the library soon.

Anyway, Invitation Only is a great continuation of the original Private. In this book, Reed's still mourning her sexy boyfriend, who is a drug dealer and now, coincidentally, is nowhere to be found. But as far as boys are concerned, things get even more complicated when Walter Whittaker, the most charming and burlesque gentleman to be found on the campus of Easton, starts to show a lot more than a little interest in Reed...even though Reed's old roommate has a major crush on him. However, Reed kinda needs to be the accessory on his arm, because there's a superb party of the century going on, The Legacy, in which she can only get in through Walter's name...

I really loved the suspense and drama in this book! Reed is being blackmailed by Natasha, her roommate, because Reed was drunkenly kissing Walt while he was groping her at a party, and Natasha's got plenty of picture proof to go with that. But the only thing Natasha wants is for Reed to snoop around in the stuff of Reed's best friends--the Billings Girls. There's no way Reed can do that, especially since they're the reason she has a future.

But it turns out, there were a lot more secrets to that blackmailing than Reed ever could have imagined...

There are so many things I want to mention in this review but will totally give the book away--like the secrets behind the blackmailing! Argh! It's driving me crazy, but I'll do my best. Anyhow, Invitation Only left me hanging, and luckily, I've got the next book in my series upstairs in the basket I use for my books. So I don't have to wait very long--actually, only until after I finish this review. But my point is, the suspense here builds up really well, is resolved, but still leaves mysteries and secrets hanging...

God, I love the Private series. What I wouldn't give to be one of those rich bitches who rule the school with an iron fist and have the hottest boyfriends and preppy, expensive clothes. And what makes this series the best is that the books are told through the first person, so I get to pretend I'm a rich boarding school girl for a few hundred pages! Yay!

Off topic. My point is, Invitation Only is a must-read. But don't attempt it without reading Private first, it'll be way too confusing. I've got the first half of the Private series ready to read and neatly stacked in my room at the moment, so keep looking out for the rest of my reviews. I'll try to grab the rest of the series whenever I'm at the library, but just keep in mind that my next several reviews will revolve around the Private series. Oh, and those reviews might be worth checking out, because just like Private, Invitation Only gets five stars!
